Catonsville shops swap spots

Two small Catonsville businesses, the Hub C'Ville Bikes and the Pottery Cove, recently took a weekend to swap their business spaces, according to an article in the Baltimore Sun.

The two shops are less than 100 feet apart, and switching the two will work better for both, according to Scott Westcoat, who owns the bike shop.

The Pottery Cove building is a standalone structure, which is set back from the road. The layout will give Westcoat space to enlarge his workshop.

The bike shop opened directly onto Frederick Road, which Westcoat believes will be better for the pottery business. Westcoat notes that the pottery is more retail-oriented, and will be able to draw in pedestrian traffic, particularly during the holidays.

Michelle D'Anna said moving was a “dream come true,” since she needs to have her shop visible. She says that even after more than five years in the same place, people would come in and say they had just found her, and wondered how long she had been in business, so she hopes a move to a more visible location will pay dividends.

Westcoat, however, did not have that problem. He says he caters to a niche market, and his clients were always able to find him.

Business people in situations like this can help their efforts by working with a flyer printing company to create handouts, directing people to the new locations.
