Catonsville medical building plans upheld

After three years in court, approval for a medical office to be built in Catonsville, near Kenwood Gardens Condominiums, has been upheld by Maryland's Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state.

Back in 2013, Baltimore County approved the plans, but the condo complex challenged the approval. Specifically, it questioned whether the zoning change that had been approved was legal, since the building comprises 89,000 square feet, rises seven stories high, and sits next to a residential area. Some condo residents said they were unaware such a project was in development, while others think the building is too big for the parcel on which it will be sited.

Stephen Whalen, the developer, said he is going ahead with the development, which is called the Southwest Physicians Pavilion, and has a price tag estimated at $2 m. Whalen said he believes the site is perfect for a regional medical practice, and added one prospective tenant withdrew during the protracted legal action, but another appeared to take their place. The new tenant has been patient, waiting as the case made its way through the courts.

According to Whalen, it could take another six to seven months to get all the necessary permits, and construction would take the best part of two years.
