Catonsville library renovation possible

Baltimore County just approved its operating budget, which includes money to renovate the Catonsville library.

The amount from the county is $732,000, but the library requires additional funds from the state, which won't be made available for another year at least. In addition, estimates have risen in the wake of the submission of engineering costs.

Planned renovations include upgrading the library's electrical systems to support new technologies, building collaborative workspaces, making shelving more accessible, and constructing a public recording studio. Ellen Kobler, a spokeswoman for Baltimore County, said the plans had to be put on hold until the state reveals how much money it will provide, then the library can decide how to proceed.

The Catonsville branch library comprises 25,500 square feet, and was begun in 1941. The current facility, which was constructed in 1963, is located on Frederick Road. Tom Quirk, the chairman of the county council, noted that the age of the building means it needs to be revitalized, adding that it is a very lively branch of the library system.

Catonsville's library boasts 29,494 active cardholders—6.9% of all the library users in Baltimore County. It has over 121,000 items in its collection and in 2016, 309,040 people visited the facility, approximately 4,200 more than came in the prior year.

Facilities like this can benefit by working with a flyer printing company, which can create a mailer for area residents explaining issues.
