Catonsville legislators believe city will get funds

Maryland's General Assembly is considering various requests for funding in the form of bond bills, and Catonsville legislators believe the city will receive the money it has requested for local projects. A vote on the issues should come before mid-April.

A bond bill is a request for the state to fund capital projects that are either local, or are not owned by the state. The projects cannot be religious in nature, and their useful life must be estimated to be at least 15 years. It is not necessary for the recipient to repay the money, but they are encouraged to try and find funds to match those the state provides.

In Catonsville, the projects that will receive the funding, if approved, are at the Community College of Baltimore county, and an equestrian center. The college will use the money to install an artificial-turf field at its Catonsville campus. The current field, which has never been renovated or replaced, dates back to 1972, and is made of natural grass.

The second project would allow the Patapsco Horse Center in Catonsville to replace the roof on its barn, and build an outdoor pavilion, which would be accessible to the handicapped. The horse center, which was founded in 1989, provides therapeutic riding programs for veterans and people with disabilities.

Efforts like these can benefit if officials work with flyer printing companies, which can create mailers for area residents explaining local issues.
