The Children's Home, a Catonsville foster care facility, has received a makeover, thanks to several local businesses and the team at ABC2 news.
The station features a show called ‘Built Upon a Dream’, which was inspired by another ABC program, ‘Extreme Makeover, Home Edition’.
Earlier this year, the CEO of the Children's Home, Andre Cooper, got a call he thought was a prank, since the caller said they wanted to come to the facility and do an extreme makeover. However, the call wasn't a joke—it was ABC2's Belinda Lee, who works in the sales department, explaining they wanted to shoot a ‘Built Upon a Dream’ episode at the home. Once Cooper agreed, construction started.
One of the companies that took part was Thompson Creek Windows. According to the company's Rick Wuest, when they got to the site, they found old windows with single panes, as well as lead paint. Wuest says his company designs, builds, and installs replacement windows, so the children's home project was a good fit for them. It also felt good to give back to the community.
At the end of the makeover, the Children's Home had new roofing, new windows, new landscaping, a new dining hall, and a rebuilt pavilion among other improvements. The value of materials and labor donated to the project was over $500,000.
Facilities like these can benefit by having Brochures created that explain the improvements and what such remodeling means for future residents.
