Catonsville, Maryland, could be set to form its own district based around the arts.
An arts and entertainment district is a localized area where a number of ventures designed to attract businesses and artists establish operations. Six arts districts are designated each year by the Maryland State Arts Council, with a county limited to having one district established per year. At present, there are no arts districts in Baltimore County, though there are 24 such districts in the state, three of which are in the city of Baltimore proper.
An arts and entertainment council was established by the Baltimore County Arts Guild after members attended a conference last year where leaders of the state districts gathered. The conference enabled the attendees from Baltimore County to see the advantages of having such a district, and they also found that Catonsville was the ideal site for a district.
Marilyn Maitland, who is president of the arts guild, said the idea is exciting because of all that can be done in a district. The most successful districts build on businesses and concerns that are already in operation. In Catonsville, these would include the Lurman Woodland Theatre as well as the city's yearly arts and crafts festival. With this foundation, Catonsville seems like a perfect fit for a new arts and entertainment district.
