Catonsville commuters get on their bikes

Locals went from four wheels to two recently, when a ‘Bike to Work’ event was held in the city.

On May 30, residents met in front of Santa's House near Catonsville's Fire Station No. 4, and rode off to work in the company of other commuters—on bicycles. There was no word about whether or not Santa joined the ride himself.

From the meeting point, there were seven possible destinations: the area around Baltimore: Washington International Airport; Frederick; Relay Elementary School; Towson; the Social Security Administration; Greenbelt/Beltsville; and Carroll Park.

Catonsville resident Charlie Murphy has been riding to work for 13 years, weather permitting, by biking to the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) train station in Relay, riding the train to Beltsville, then getting off and cycling the rest of the way to his office. He says the trip is sometimes the best part of his day.

Thomas Aljuni, who is president of Catonsville's Rails to Trails organization, followed Murphy's route, saying the event was designed to get people to consider exploring other methods of transport besides driving. He adds that even though it's not always practical, biking is better for a person's health, saves money, gets cars off the road, and helps the environment.

The city could work with brochure printers to create a map of suggested bike routes in and around Catonsville, and use it as part of a mass Mailing campaign.
