Catonsville area class to cover winter seed starting

Experienced green thumbs have plenty of tricks up their sleeves when it comes to seed starting, and a Catonsville area workshop will share these with the gardening public.

Baltimore Tree Farm will be offering home horticulturalists an opportunity to learn about winter seed starting, which is commonly used for propagating native plants and other species that require cold stratification. It will run for two hours, and as only a limited number of tickets are on offer, those interested may wish to purchase theirs well in advance.

The facilitator will cover the basics of cold stratification, including why some species require this to break their seed dormancy. It may be especially helpful for those who would like to add native plants to their home landscape, and the learning will be hands-on. Everyone will prepare their own mini greenhouse to take home so they can start right away, and admission will be by donation. Everyone is asked to supply a clean and clear plastic milk jug or a large salad container, and the seeds and other materials will be provided.

Home gardeners often engage in environmental stewardship by preserving native species and providing homes for wildlife. A horticulture workshop offers them the opportunity to add to their knowledge and skillset, and a flyer printing company can help spread the word.

The Winter Seed Sowing Workshop will be offered on Sunday, February 9 at 800 West 36th Street in Baltimore. It will begin at 10:00 am.
