Catonsviille activity to explore making maple syrup

Maple syrup is a popular condiment, and a Catonsville activity will show how sap makes its way from a tree to the table.

The team at Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum has organized a February event that will teach the fundamentals of tapping maple trees. It will offer the participants information and tips they can use at home, with tickets priced at $5 each.

As some species of native maples are more productive than others, the participants will brush up on their winter tree identification so they can choose ones that are as productive as possible. They will learn how to install the spigot and boil down the sap they collect to make syrup, sugar, and other maple products. Before it is time to head for home, everyone will be treated to a stack of pancakes and syrup, and all are reminded to come dressed appropriately for the weather

The process of making syrup from maple sap may be of interest to many, and kids often find it especially fascinating. A printer will be able to prepare a variety of small Promotional Products for not-for-profit groups to distribute during workshops and other activities they host.

This introduction to the practice of sugaring off will be on offer on February 12. It will be held at 300 Oella Avenue in Catonsville, and will start at 1:00 pm.
