Pinellas Park residents who would like to discover how they can capture rain water to help keep their garden looking its best may wish to save space on their calendar for an upcoming area workshop.
Brian Niemann, who is a UF/IFAS Extension agent with an expertise in Florida-friendly landscaping, will be facilitating a class that will explore the benefits of utilizing a rain barrel and will also outline the steps the participants can take to build one of their very own.
The session will explain how recycled rainwater can be used for all type of gardens, which can help to conserve the local water supply. Each person who participates will be given step-by-step instructions to build a rain barrel, and they can also choose to purchase a premade one ahead of the event. These will be made from food grade plastic drums that have been recycled, and they can hold approximately 55 gallons each. The organizers not that these must be ordered ahead of time, and they also recommend that the user install a screen on the top of the barrel to keep out mosquitoes and debris. Manuals and other materials for this type of occasion can be produced by local Print shops.
The workshop is free to attend, and the barrels can be ordered for $40 each. It will be held on May 4 at 1800 Weedon Drive NE in St. Petersburg. Anyone with questions has been asked to contact bniemann@pinellascounty.org for more details.
