While lots of people enjoy kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and other cole crops, they may not realize they are simply different varieties of the same plant. This is just the sort of fun fact that will be included in a Pinellas Park area morning workshop taking place this July.
When people are preparing plant-based foods in their kitchen, they are engaging in some amateur botany. The session will provide an introduction to how wild plants became domesticated for human use and how this occurred over time.
The learners in the workshop will discover where the fruits and veggies in their fridge come from, including how and where they are grown. They will also be introduced to the history of these foods and how wild herbs, spices and leafy greens evolved over time to become the vegetables and other ingredients in common use today.
This event has been scheduled for the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center, and registration is free. Assistance and other accommodations may be available for those who have physical or other challenges so that they can fully participate in this activity. Copies of handouts and other materials can be prepared for this sort of function by local Stationery printers.
The chance for the public to discover the origins of the vegetables and fruit on their plates will be taking place on July 13. It is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, and more details can be found on its internet listing.
