The Naples City Council recently voted to ban on-street parking in the Port Royal neighborhood by commercial vehicles. The vote was unanimous.
The matter was first discussed by the city council in October, when the Streets & Stormwater Department’s director, Gregg Strakaluse, pointed out that having commercial vehicles parking on Port Royal’s streets constituted a safety hazard. He noted that 90% of the streets are narrow, with most no more than 20 feet wide.
A current ordinance prohibits commercial vehicles from parking on a street if doing so leaves twelve feet or less for traffic to pass. Since the streets are so narrow, and many vehicles are eight feet wide, the minimum distance is not always observed.
Strakaluse said city staffers and the Port Royal Association have been working together for several years to try and find solutions to the problem. Suggestions included more stringent enforcement of the law that’s currently in place; and alternating the days when service can be provided by switching between even and odd house numbers.
Other ideas included widening Port Royal’s streets, and developing a list of service providers who could have access to the neighborhood’s businesses. After considering the measures, Andy Deane, the president of the Port Royal Association, said barring vehicles completely seemed the best option.
The ban will go into effect in 60 days, at which time no-parking Signs will be posted. Agencies considering matters like this can use flyer printing to keep residents informed before the action occurs.
