Meals of Hope, a nonprofit that aims to provide food for those in Naples and the broader Southwest Florida region, has launched a month-long campaign to help raised money.
The annual Satisfy the Hungry food drive typically includes donations of non-perishable food items, but this year’s event focuses on just monetary support. Last year’s drive raised $170,000.
The drive is in association with other local organizations like the Collier Harvest Foundation, Everglades Community Food Pantry, Harry Chapin Food Bank, and Naples Senior Center. The money raised through charitable drives like this, often promoted through banner printing and special events, can make up a major part of nonprofit organizations’ annual budgets.
Money raised goes towards Meals of Hope’s outreach to food-insecure people from all walks of life. These programs include packed meals as well as permanent food pantries and out-of-school meal programs for children. Over 4,000 clients receive a weekly supply of food that includes products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, dry and canned goods, and toiletries. Past years have included food drop-off venues, a food-collection bus and themed weeks encouraging donations of specific items. Organizations such as the Collier Harvest Foundation and Everglades Community Food Pantry have agreed to match all donations up to $55, 000.
Meals of Hope’s annual donation drive launched on April 5 and will run until May 7, with donations able to be made online.
