Royal Caribbean has announced a plan to construct a new terminal in Miami that will accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world.
Despite being a sizeable port, PortMiami is not currently able to accommodate Oasis-class ships, of which Royal Caribbean presently has three with another in the pipeline. However, that will change with the cruise company’s construction of a 17,000-square-foot terminal in Miami. Plans for the ‘Crown of Miami’, which will open in 2018, were announced the end of June.
The first of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class cruise ships – the Oasis of the Seas – was launched in 2009. It was followed in 2010 by the Allure of the Seas and in May of this year by the Harmony of the Seas. A fourth vessel in the Oasis-class, is due to be launched in 2018 and will likely list ‘Crown of Miami’, on its Brochures as its home port.
For years, the only Florida port large enough to handle these giant ships was Port Everglades. However, the new Port Canaveral terminal can accommodate these larger cruise ships as well, and once the Harmony of the Seas arrives at Port Everglades, the Oasis of the Seas will be moving to Port Canaveral.
When completed, the ‘Crown of Miami’ will increase the number of Royal Caribbean passengers who pass through PortMiami from 750,000 to 1.8 million per year. The project is expected to generate 4,000 jobs.
