Miami dogs kitted out with safety accessories

Recently, members of Miami’s forces received some much needed protective gear, thanks to a local donor.

Police dogs in Miami are sporting some new duds, but this is for reasons of safety rather than fashion. CBS Miami reports that when the city’s K-9 unit goes out into the field, they will have their own set of protective gear.

Bullet-proof Vests, which incidentally are stab-proof as well, were provided by Pet Armor, a company that specializes in pet care products. The Vests are greatly appreciated by the department, which lost one of its four-legged officers in 2000.

Police dogs shown wearing their new Vests might make a good photo opportunity for a postcard printing service to use in a promotional and educational campaign for the city’s police department, especially the K-9 unit.

Rokolfo Llanes, Miami’s chief of police, told a CBS reporter about Atlas, a member of the K-9 team that was killed in the line of duty. He explained that Atlas and his handler, Officer Cooper, chased and confronted a suspect, but that this resulted in the death of the police dog.

Now, thanks to the generosity of Pet Armor, which is reported to have assumed the full cost of the $950 K-9 Vests, the department is less likely to have to go through such an experience again.
