Amazon improves take-out in Miami

Amazon is branching out into the take-out food business in Miami with its Amazon Restaurants.

June 7 was a red-letter day for those who enjoy eating at home but don’t want to cook. That was when Amazon announced that it partnered with 60 local restaurants to provide its Prime members here in Miami with free one-hour delivery of food.

With either a visit to the new Prime Now website or by using the Prime Now mobile app, customers in Miami are able to check out an establishment's menu, place their order and track delivery.

Naturally, the restaurants in question will be publicizing their part in Prime Now, perhaps with a flyer printing service so Prime Now members who would not normally order from them may now do so. The cost of Amazon Prime membership is $99 per year.

According to Amazon, there is no delivery charge and menu items will not be marked up. Moreover, if within 24 hours of ordering, a customer discovers an item was listed higher on Prime Now than on a restaurant’s current online menu, Amazon promises to refund to the customer the price of that item.

Launched last fall, Amazon Restaurants was made available first in Seattle, followed in time by Los Angeles and San Francisco among other cities. On the same day that Miami was added to the service so was Atlanta.
