A legendary rock band from Boston is bringing their unique style to Denver.
The Pixies got together in 1986, formed by Black Francis and Joey Santiago, who met at college. Santiago is a guitarist, and Francis is a songwriter who also handles rhythm guitar and vocals. The first iteration of the band also included drummer David Lovering and Kim Deal on bass and handling vocals. Deal left the band in 2013, and the group hired Kim Shattuck to serve as their bassist when they toured. Shattuck left that same year and Paz Lenchantin took over, and in 2016, became a permanent band member.
The group split up in 1993 and was inactive until 2004, but the years leading up to their reunion only increased their popularity and productivity, and they have released four albums since 2014 with the latest, “Doggerel,” dropping in 2022.
The Pixies rose to prominence during the boom in alternative rock in the 1990s, and their music is often said to have pioneered the “quiet verse, loud chorus” quality that influenced later bands such as Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, and Nirvana. A review said:
“ . . . as ‘Here Comes Your Man’ starts the first of many singalongs, the setting serves as a reminder that for all the focus on their lyrics and electrifying noise, they really can make an indecently good pop group.”
The Pixies will be at the Mission Ballroom in Denver on May 10, along with support act Pond. When concerts like this are planned, organizers can use poster printing to advertise them.
