Legendary lady of soul to light up Denver

A soul legend is coming to Denver in early April.

Gladys Knight will appear at the Paramount Theatre and fans will no doubt want to grab tickets now so they do not miss an opportunity to see the “Empress of Soul.”

Knight is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, who made her debut in 1953, starting what is now a six-decade career.

She got her start when she was only seven and won a televised talent contest, “Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour,” a forerunner of shows like today’s “American Idol.” Her win came in 1952, after which she, along with her cousins, sister, and brother formed a musical group they called The Pips. They began touring almost immediately, and Motown signed them in 1966.

The group had considerable success with Motown, dropping the first version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” ever released on the label. They were still with Motown when they won a Grammy for “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).”

In 1973 they moved to Buddha Records, where Gladys released the iconic “Midnight Train to Georgia.” In her career she has recorded with stars like Elton John and Stevie Wonder, and had success as an actress. A review says:

“Gladys Knight exceeded all expectations. Her voice was so strong, smooth and soulful.”

Gladys Knight will be at the Paramount Theatre on April 7. When events like this are scheduled, organizers can advertise them with materials they create using poster printing.
