The Colorado Springs Flea Market, owned by the Colorado Springs Cloud family, was recently bought by United Flea Markets, based in Denver. The sale ends over 25 years of the Cloud's ownership, though Randy Cloud will stay on as general manager.
The sale includes the business itself, which is on East Platte Avenue, as well as parking lots, 25 acres, and several buildings – one housing a restaurant/cafe, along with an outdoor vendor building and an indoor sales pavilion. According to the land records of El Paso County, the sale price was $4.7m.
United Flea Market's co-owner, CEO and president, Rob Sieban, said that flea markets are highly attractive to shoppers, even when many people today buy items online. He said that much of the enjoyment of going to a flea market is the idea of browsing to see what items are for sale, and the excitement of discovering bargains or finding unusual objects.
He also noted that entrepreneurs who are launching startups may lease space at a flea market to get their businesses off the ground by introducing their products to shoppers. Sometimes vendors have full-time jobs and sell during the weekends to make some extra money.
