Thousands of participants lit up the sky when they released lanterns and let them soar last month
Revelers met at the Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain to celebrate Lantern Fest's second year. In addition, they roasted marshmallows, listened to live music, danced, and enjoyed snacks from local vendors. Then, when it was dark enough, thousands lit lanterns and sent them into the sky—there were an estimated 10,000 lanterns released this year.
Throughout history, lanterns have been used to request good weather and symbolize good fortune in many kinds of celebrations, and to decorate outdoor events, to name a few.
The event required preregistration, and each participant was given a lantern, as well as other goodies. Children under 15 were admitted free, but were not allowed to light the lanterns themselves.
The lanterns are small, 100% biodegradable, and also designed to burn out before landing. However, four area fire departments were on hand in case a fire started. There was also a plane equipped with infrared technology in the air to monitor the event, and ‘Lantern Chasers’ who recovered about 95% of the lanterns.
Proceeds from the event go to support an organization known as Angels of American's Fallen, which provides mentoring and support to children of fallen first responders and military personnel.
Event organizers might work with a poster printing company on a spectacular design for Posters for next year, and display them throughout the area.
