The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is hoping to sign up 48 new recruits for the police academy class that begins next month, with more to follow later this year.
The city is trying to make sure it has enough law enforcement personnel on the job, since many officers are due to retire this year.
Ray Isaac, the department's recruiting officer, said it takes a special type of person to be a police officer, and CSPD is looking for these people right now. He reassures those who are interested that they do not need prior experience, nor do they have to present any sort of certification. The academy provides all the training, and is a certified training institution.
After passing a number of screenings and tests, recruits are sent to the Police Academy for training, which lasts six months. Isaac said the department wants to find another 48-50 people for the class slated to begin in October. He also acknowledges that officers will face dangerous situations at times throughout their careers, but their academy training will prepare them for what they face on patrol.
The current recruiting effort is to make sure the department is fully staffed so it can respond quickly to emergency calls. The department is also trying to attract more women.
CSPD might work with a postcard printing company on a card for area residents to encourage them to apply.
