First place and a $2,150 prize in the recent Kaiser Permanente Fire Up Your Feet Fall Challenge went to a local school; Chinook Trail Elementary in Academy School District 20.
Chinook, of Colorado Springs, came out on top among the 135 schools from all over the state that participated in the fitness challenge. It took a combination of students, family members, teachers, and other school employees to win, and a total of 5,400 individuals took part throughout Colorado.
In addition to Chinook, nine other schools received progressively smaller cash awards. These ranged from second-placed Peiffer Elementary in Littleton, which received $1,150, down to the $200 given to each of the three schools that tied for seventh place.
The Fire Up Your Feet Challenges came into being in 2013. Those who take part track their activity over the course of a month. The Fall Challenge ended on October 31st, and awards were given based on most bicycling and walking, the highest level of participation, and the most overall activity.
With the help of a flyer printing service, community support for a challenge such as this one can be increased. This is the second time Chinook Elementary has been in the winners’ circle for the challenge, since it won an award last spring as well. Next on the agenda is the Spring Challenge, which will be April 13th through May 15th in Colorado.
Money received from the challenge provides a variety of extras for schools, such as new safety Vests, bike racks, and incentives for walking.
