Maestro James Domine, who is the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra's conductor, will be discussing Broadway musicals next month.
Domine has a great deal of insight into the development, as well as the performance, of Broadway shows, and will share his knowledge during a presentation about this popular art form. He will provide example for the audience to listen to, as well as discussing the repertoire. Then, he will go on to talk about the lyricist, composer, and sources for each show.
He also plans to sketch the role performers and composers had in developing the American musical. Musicals began in ethnic venues, such as Yiddish theaters, in New York City near the beginning of the 20th Century. Maestro Domine will talk about these foundational performances, and then trace the history of musicals through the end of the century. For this course, the Maestro will concentrate on shows that appeared during Broadway's ‘Golden Age’, generally considered to be the 30-year period from the late 1930s to the 1960s.
There are two presentations scheduled in the series. The first will take place September 6, beginning at 1:00 pm. The second is scheduled for November 15, starting at 2:30 pm. Both will be held in the IAC Shepher Community Center in Woodland Hills on Winnetka Avenue.
