Kala Koa Entertainment will hold the Slack Key Festival in Redondo Beach in January, continuing the 18-year-old festival tradition of celebrating the legacy of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar and Music.
Hawaiian Slack Key guitar (ki ho`alu) is a specific fingerstyle technique of playing the guitar that was invented after the instruments were introduced by Latin American cattlemen and European sailors in the 19th century. “Slack key” originated from the Hawaiian kī hōʻalu, which essentially means to "loosen the [tuning] key.” Slack Key guitar artists slack the strings of their guitars to create an open, resonate sound that is easily identifiable as uniquely Hawaiian.
Considered the largest Hawaiian musical event of the year, the festival will showcase award-winning Hawaiian kiho’alu guitarists as well as other vocal performances and supporting musicians. Hula performances will also be featured. Other entertainment and activities include browsing island-themed gifts, handmade crafts, artwork, Apparel and home decor. Food options will include authentic shaved ice and Hawaiian plate lunches.
Musical festivals may distribute informative Brochures detailing event-specific activities and time schedules. Event organizers may seek out brochure printing services at local Print shops that may offer bulk discounts.
The Southern California Slack Key Festival is scheduled for January 19. It will be held at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, located at 1935 Manhattan Beach Boulevard. Tickets range from $28 to $153, depending on seat selection.
