Redondo Beach receives $4.8m grant to buy AES power plant site

The city of Redondo Beach will accept funds to purchase a 50-acre, natural gas power plant that costs approximately $50m.

In June 2018, the California Natural Resources Agency issued a $4bn bond under Proposition 68 to spend on environmental projects. From a total of 25 recipients, Redondo Beach will be awarded the largest grant.

The mission is to preserve or promote the growth of natural park resources and community services, aimed at restoring wetland areas and converting industrial sites into parkland once generator stations have been decommissioned.

The next step is to determine whether natural gas plants can operate past their three-year limit, as stated by the State Water Resources Board. There are also environmental risks associated with using seawater for the plant cooling process.

Later in October, the Public Utilities Commission will vote on whether or not they should keep four power plants running so that future energy demands are fulfilled. Corporate Gifts will add perspective to board meetings about environmental policies.

As of now, the AES is still addressing the decision to retire the power plants near Redondo Beach. They recommend initiating demolition activities on idle infrastructure in order to speed up reconstruction of the property for non-industrial purposes.

The Redondo Beach power plants are scheduled to stop generating electricity by December 31, 2020, which is further supported by Mayor Brand.
