David Lombard, nicknamed the “Laptop Elf”, is giving away laptops to an elementary school in Redondo Beach.
His current goal for the Laptop Elf Project is to supply a classroom with 30 of the machines at a public school’s computer lab. For many years, Lombard was focused on assisting senior citizens with setting up their desktops and troubleshooting technical problems. He would often repair old laptops and distribute them to those who did not have access to a computer.
As part of the project, he will work alongside educators to address teachers’ requests on Nextdoor for more PCs, laptops, and tablets. When Lombard was asked to retrieve additional Google Chromebooks, he took an alternative approach, handing the school Linux laptops that used the Chromium browser.
So far, he has donated over 150 operating systems to classrooms, ensuring that students are not forced to pay for Windows. The Laptop Elf project would support high school seniors by providing them with access to old computers through social media contacts. These volunteer efforts will include setting up Wi-Fi, removing malware, and connecting school printers.
He has already given a K-5 teacher from Dolores Elementary 20 laptops so her students could take home in-class assignments. The Laptop Elf will be sending laptops to nonprofit organizations that help the homeless, as well as reaching out to real estate companies for their old devices.
This project is predicted to continue through February 2020. Volunteers can list their contact information on Business Cards to follow up with companies or individuals interested in donating.
