Harvest Festival returns for milestone year

The 25th annual Harvest Festival of Dulcimers returns to Redondo Beach later this month.

A dulcimer is a musical instrument played by either plucking, bowing, or strumming. The instrument has a fretted fingerboard and long rounded body.

The daylong activities will feature workshops and classes for musicians who have an interest in playing the dulcimer and also teachings on other instruments, including the autoharp, ukulele, harmonica, and bodhran.

Those interested in singing can attend classes on shape-note singing, music improve, and sing-along. Musicians involved in the event either through teachings or just performing throughout the day could work with Print shops to obtain Business Cards to hand out at the festival.

Vendors will also be on hand selling refreshments, including food and drinks that attendees can purchase. There will also be a consignment booth space to sell unwanted or no longer needed musical instruments and accessories. Organizers ask for a $10 donation for each instrument sold.

The event finale will include a live ticketed performance at the end of the daylong festival. The performance will begin at 6:00 pm. The main performers, who are known nationwide, will be Mark Alan Wade who plays a hammered dulcimer and David Haas who plays a mountain dulcimer.

The festival will be held this year at the Riviera United Methodist Church at 375 Palos Verdes Boulevard. The event will take place on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
