Jazz great to appear in Newport Beach

A legendary jazz guitarist with 10 Grammys to his credit will be performing soon in Newport Beach.

George Benson is a singer/songwriter and guitarist who started his career playing jazz guitar when he was 19. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a child prodigy, Benson has been playing since he was seven, when he made a few dollars playing a ukulele in a local drug store. He took up the guitar when he was eight, and began recording when he was nine. He cut four sides, and two were subsequently released – “It Should Have Been Me” and “She Makes Me Mad.”

In his career, Benson has released 36 studio albums, eight live albums, 21 compilation albums, two video albums, and 72 EPs and singles, and he has been heard as a sideman no fewer than 115 times. He is probably best known for his album “Breezin,” which won three Grammys and produced the single “This Masquerade,” which topped the R&B, pop, and jazz charts. The RIAA certified the “Breezin’” album triple-Platinum, and it has gone on to be one of the biggest selling jazz albums ever recorded.

A review of Benson says:

“. . . Benson . . . exits leaving his audience wanting plenty more.”
