Dance contest makes way to Newport Beach

A classic dance competition is returning to Newport Beach to bring in the new year.

The California Balboa Classic 2020 is a weekend full of friends, music, fun, and dance competitions. The Classic, called the CalBal for short, brings back the dances popular in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, in particular the Balboa, which is a type of Swing dance that was born in Newport Beach in the 1920s.

Leading the music will be Jonathan Stout, who knows how to play this music, since he is a Swing dancer as well as conductor. He will conduct the Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five Orchestra on both Friday and Saturday nights, and on Sunday, he will lead his Grand Slam Sextet. In addition to the orchestra, the organizers have invited musicians from throughout the country, who are familiar with Swing music, to play. There will also be a line-up of all-star DJs to keep the party going.

There are seven dance contests scheduled for the weekend. These include the Amateur Classic preliminaries; preliminaries in the Pure Balboa Classic dance; preliminaries in the Open Mixed Couples; and finals in these classes. There are also workshops and instructional sessions all weekend long.

The California Balboa Classic 2020 is set for January 17, at the Hyatt Regency in Newport Beach, with check-in and registration beginning at 9.00 am. The event runs the entire weekend until January 20, at 11.59 pm. Banner printing can provide appropriate decorations for events like this.
