Starting from March 2020, residents of Santa Clara County might be able to cast their votes at one of 125 voting centers across the county, and they will be able to fill out their ballots up to 10 days before the official election day.
The goal is to make it easier for people to vote. The only requirement is that they go to polling stations located within the boundaries of their counties. In Santa Clara County, this means that 850 polling centers will be replaced by 125 voting centers, where people can register instantly, vote in person, or pick up replacement ballots produced with the help of Stationery printers. Voters will also be able to receive their ballots in the mail.
Residents in towns with high populations such as Morgan Hill are used to having polling stations in convenient locations. With the new system, people who live in mail-only precincts in rural areas will now have the option of using a nearby voting center as well.
The voting centers will all be equipped with electronic poll logs that allow officials to see whether a person has already voted and how. Implementing these changes is expected to cost the county an extra $10m every year. This is because the county will be required to spend more money to hire and train staff over several days rather than just on one day with the old system. The good news for the budget is that they will be able to spend 25% less money on voting machines.
