The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band refer to the plot of land under contention as Juristac. City Council members from Morgan Hill voted in favor of preserving the land in a packed City Hall. Close to 100 supporters of the vote to preserve the land arrived at Morgan Hill’s City Hall one hour before. Members of the crowd included people from the ACLU and The Smoky Bay Drummers. Banner printing is often used as a way to show support for a specific cause.
The Committee for Green Foothills is another organization that supports preserving the site. Alice Kaufam, the legislative advocacy director for the committee mentioned that:
“A quarry in that location would cut right across a really important wildlife corridor and make it really difficult for mountain lions and other important species to be able to migrate out of the Santa Cruz mountains.”
Jurastic is known by most of the residents as Sargent Ranch. Developers are planning a project for the site which would turn it into a sand and gravel quarry. Now that the city officials in Morgan Hill have voted in favor of its preservation, the leaders of the county will weigh in on the matter.
The Environmental Impact Report for the proposed quarry has yet to be released.
