A little history
The city was named for its founder, Hiram Morgan Hill, a Missouri businessman who came to California and married Diana Murphy, the daughter of a prominent family, in 1882. When Diana's father died, she and Hiram inherited 4,500 acres near the first Murphy holdings. By 1886, they had inherited another 22,000 acres, but a family scandal led them to spend less time in the area. However, by 1898, a community had grown up near what was called Morgan's Hill Ranch, and the Southern Pacific Railroad made a stop there. Passengers would ask the train to stop at “Morgan's Hill Ranch,” which finally became simply “Morgan's Hill.”
