Residents of Morgan Hill felt their first earthquake of the decade on the first day of the year.
The quake’s epicenter was just a few miles northeast of Morgan Hill, right between Henry Coe State Park and Anderson Reservoir. The quake registered a 3.9 on the Richter Scale and it was felt at 11.16 pm on January 1. According to the U.S Geological Survey’s Did You Feel It? website, around 3,000 people reported feeling the quake but thankfully it was not strong enough to cause any damage to people or property. People as far away as San Francisco and Carmel reported experiencing tremors as well.
People who live in a seven-mile radius of the quake said that they rated the strength of the quake as being a 4 out of 10. The USGS initially reported that the quake had a magnitude of 4.1 however it was later revised to 3.9. Government agencies tend to use flyer printing to educate people on how to protect themselves when strong earthquakes hit.
Another quake was felt soon after. At 2:13 am on January 2, a quake which was recorded with a magnitude of 4.0 hit a few miles off the coast of Los Angeles, between Santa Cruz Island and Malibu. This quake was felt from 50 miles away in Torrance and North Hollywood.
The largest quake to hit California in the past 30 days was on December 17 and its epicenter was near Paso Robles. It measured a 4.3 on the Richter Scale.
