MHPD operating program for Pedestrian Safety Month

Morgan Hill Police Department (MHPD) will be working together with other law enforcement agencies all over California for Pedestrian Safety Month in order to decrease the number of pedestrian-related injuries on the roads.

Pedestrian Safety Month is held every September. The MHPD will be aiming to reduce the number of pedestrian injuries in the state with a program aimed at raising awareness, and it will be carried out throughout this month. Officers will increase their presence on the roads and concentrate on pedestrians and drivers who violate laws that make accidents more likely.

They will be looking out for violations such as speeding, driving while distracted, ignoring traffic lights, and not stopping for pedestrians when they have right of way. Poster printing at black spots could be used to remind both pedestrians and drivers to be careful.

When asked about the program, Morgan Hill’s Police Sergeant Ray Ramos said:

“Think about how you would want a driver to act when you are walking, and vice versa. Keep that in mind and follow the rules of the road so we can all arrive where we’re headed safely.”

The MHPD put up the following guidelines that will help keep people safe. Pedestrians are advised to:

- Look both ways before crossing streets
- Ensure that drivers can see them before deciding to cross
- Stay on the sidewalk

Drivers are advised to:

- Obey speed limits
- Try not to block crosswalks
- Stop when pedestrians enter crosswalks
