Thanks to popular demand, the Santa Clara Library District will be restarting its Food for Fines program, which allows people to pay off their outstanding library fines by donating nonperishable foods. Patrons will be able to pay off up to $100 worth of their fines in this manner.
The first round of this event was held in 2018. Close to 30,000 meals were donated and given to the Second Harvest Food Bank, which has offices in San Mateo and Santa Clara. Thousands of people participated and they were able to waive about $150,000 worth of fines. 5,000 individuals were able to eliminate their library fines while helping the local community. The libraries even received donations from people who didn’t have any fines to waive.
The Santa Clara Library District has seven community libraries in locations that include Morgan Hill and San Mateo. People who wish to participate are asked to bring in their food donations during normal business hours. Participants who require new library cards are encouraged to sign up and receive new ones, which will be printed immediately on the library’s in-house Stationery printer. A list of the foods that will be accepted as donations can be found at on the library’s website.
Second Harvest is delighted by the success of the Food for Fines program. The charity organization feeds more than 250,000 people every month and more than half of them are seniors and children. This program goes a long way to helping Second Harvest tend to the needs of vulnerable households in the community.
