Hayward pilots to test skills at rally

Pilots and aviation enthusiasts should note that the 58th Annual Hayward Air Rally will be held in June, with proceeds going to the EAA Air Academy.

Created by Hayward city officials in 1965, the rally is an opportunity for pilots to show off their aviation skills and hone new skills along the way. At the event, pilots will have the chance to test their navigation, flight planning, and piloting skills as they traverse a VFR cross-country journey of around 500 miles, which will be separated into two legs, from Hayward, California to Redding, California to Bend, Oregon. The challenge will not be testing speed, but instead it will specifically test ability to navigate and manage fuel intake. Pilots must be certified, and all piston aircraft types will be allowed.

After pilots arrive in Bend, there will be an awards party with food for the participants and their guests. There will also be trophies and other awards for the winning pilots. Proceeds raised will go towards scholarships for EAA Air Academy students.

Skill challenges like this can also provide great opportunities for networking, which participants may prepare for by seeking out business card printing services to increase their supply of cards.

The rally is scheduled for June 3 through June 5. The starting point is the Hayward Executive Airport KHWD. Registration information can be found on the rally's website.
