Hayward celebrates art and the power of the cube

Last Saturday was a huge day for Hayward fans of the classic puzzle the Rubik’s Cube. The Hayward City Hall was the site for the 2015 Rubik’s Rumble – a celebration of speed and dexterity that also served to provide the raw materials for some inspiring art.

The competition challenged attendees to solve the cubes as fast as possible, with variants for solving while blindfolded or one-handed. The event is one of several hosted around the country, and draws millions of Rubik’s Cube fans (or ‘Cubers’) every year to determine who is the fastest. This all leads up to a national championship where contestants can compete for big prizes.

The competition was not the only aspect of this year’s Rubik’s Rumble though; local artist Pete Fecteau used the event to assemble pieces for an ambitious work of art. He assembled hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes in specific patterns to create a 5x5’ mosaic of Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Pakistani Activist Malala Yousafzai. The artist commented that the work was an “embodiment of education”. Fecteau is famous for building mosaics of famous figures, and Malala follows Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King, Jr. in being immortalized in cubic form.

The Rubik’s Rumble takes place every November in Hayward. Those interested in Rubik’s Cubes, competitions, or the artwork of Fecteau should check out the promotional materials or their websites and Facebook pages.
