Hayward area gets ready for a hootenanny

The Sunol Regional Wilderness, just to the southeast of Hayward, is getting ready for old fashioned dancing and music with the Old-Timey Hootenanny.

Featuring live music and activities for kids, the event is billed on Flyers as an educational and fun event for the whole family.

The day is a celebration of the settler heritage of the area, providing bluegrass music by the band Haywire, as well as square dance caller Andy Wilson. Square dance lessons will be provided for any interested participants. There will also be a talk and demonstration of banjo music by savant of the instrument Gordy Ohlinger. Games and crafts based on the settler history of the bay area will also be provided. The event is free, but there is a parking fee of $5. Barbecue dinners and snacks will also be available for purchase.

The Sunol Regional Wilderness has been inhabited since Native American times. When settlers first came to the region, it was primarily ranch land and still serves as pasture land for cattle. The land first became a regional park in 1962 and offers trails for hiking, horse riding, and mountain biking for the public.

The Old-Timey Hootenanny will be held on October 24 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Old Green Barn Visitor Center on 1895 Geary Road. Anyone looking for more information should look on the park’s website.
