Usually shy and retiring, bats are a mammal often poorly understood by the general public. Kids taking part in a special event in the Hayward area this summer will all go home better informed about these voracious eaters of insect pests.
A selection of the species of bats that can be found in Northern California will be included in the Norcal Bats workshop, which is free to attend. The facilitators will bring along some that have been rescued by area wildlife welfare groups so that the kids can meet them up close and personal and see for themselves that these small creatures are nothing to fear.
Along with an opportunity to see some bats face to face, the children in the group will discover more about their life cycle and habits, and also how they fly, hunt and what sorts of food they eat. It is intended for kids who are at least of preschool age and up, and it will run for about one hour.
By helping to create and foster an interest in wildlife, and event like this can help to build the next generation of conservationists. Coloring and activity sheets, field guides Notebooks, promotional Pens, and other items can be prepared to hand out during this sort of function by local Print shops.
The batty event will be taking place on July 19, and is being offered by Foster City Library.
