The Ocean Institute in Dana Point will grow white sea bass in a grow-out pen project for the California Fish and Wildlife Resources and Hatchery project. The pen will be part of its educational program.
The program will collect data on white bass anatomy and tagging, and use volunteers to monitor fish delivery and educational tours. Fish will be provided by a hatchery in Carlsbad.
The pen will be located at the end of the dock in Dana Point near the Ocean Institute, and is supposed to be 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, with a floating walkway to be built around its perimeter.
The Pens are enclosed with a net to protect fish from the sun and other predators. It will be used as a teaching forum for the public and volunteers.
The sea bass will supplement the public stock available, after the Coastal Commission approved the request late last year. The California OREHP will increase the breeding of white sea bass a commercially popular fish in Dana Point.
The California Fish and Wildlife department will provide guidance and regularly inspect the pen, while the Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization that focuses on marine education, history, and science in Dana Point. Printers provide Letterheads for organizations like this.
The Ocean Institute is located at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive.
