Officials with Burbank Unified School District have created a new position that they hope will make a difference in the lives of its teenaged students.
After developing its first mental health and wellness plan and decision to create the position of a mental health and wellness coordinator, the job description was constructed. The coordinator will help students and families who may need assistance in navigating through the system of supports that exists both in and out of the school setting. He or she will also set programing for staff, pupils, and families, and play a significant role in the setup of a wellness center at John Burroughs High School.
Part of the job description will be that the successful candidate will preferably have a teaching credential, but it will not be required.
According to Board President Larry Applebaum, the ideal person for the job will be someone with experience in both the educational and mental health worlds, as they would be able to work in both and bring them together. Brochures and other materials that can help someone in this position with their work can be produced by a printer.
The next step will be the recruitment of an individual to fill this position, but exactly when this will happen has not been determined.
