Burbank home horticulturists to get started at seed saving

Seed saving can be both fun and thrifty, and a Burbank workshop will help local gardeners add some new skills to their personal toolbox.

Collecting seeds from garden and wild plants gives home horticulturalists a way to preserve biodiversity, save money, and even develop their own cultivars adapted to a particular microclimate. Plant prorogation expert Frank Obregon will share his knowledge, and both Descanso Gardens members and non-members alike are welcome.

The group will learn the how, when, where, and why of seed saving, and the skills taught can apply to the upcoming season. Treatments, such as scarification, that make it easier to germinate seeds with a tough outer shell may be taught, and any materials needed will be provided. While the learning opportunity is open to all, advance registration is mandatory to take a seat, and it will take one and half hours to complete.

Many gardeners are eager to learn new skills, and workshops provide a fun way for them to do so and also meet others who also enjoy getting their hands dirty. A printing services company will be happy to provide full color Copies of handouts for an event.

This introduction to the art of saving seeds is set for January 28 at 2:00 pm. Descanso Gardens can be found at 1418 Descanso Drive in La CaƱada Flintridge.
