What's Happening in Warrington, England…

Warrington's diverse nature celebrated

The ethnic diversity of modern day Warrington has been marked in a borough reception, which saw more than 20 different cultural groups come together in a fun and lively atmosphere.

It was the second hosting of the Ethnic Reception by the Warrington and District Arts Council. The theme chosen for the event was 'A Taste of Warrington: Many Peoples, One Town', with poster printing showing just how the modern town is a cornucopia of variety.

Thought to be the only town in the UK to be hosting such events, the town council has said that the arts council is now one of the major driving forces in Warrington.

In what was a carnival atmosphere with rich colour and music from 22 different ethnic backgrounds, there was a great deal going on for everyone to enjoy.

Acts putting on a show for the day included the Thelwall Morris Men, Royal Northern College of Music flutist Meera Maharaj, and dancers from the Philippines, Poland and Nigeria. There were also representatives from Slovakia, Hungary and a number of other far flung places.

Addressing the audience, the Mayor of Warrington said that it was important that all of the people living in Warrington were brought together. Going on to say it was a 'major priority' for the town, he said he was hopeful that the 2015 event would be an even better one than this year's.
