Stoke on Trent in bid to be named UK city of culture

Local authorities in Stoke on Trent are planning to join forces in a bid to be named as the UK capital for culture. The title would provide a much-needed boost to the area’s art and history-related industries.

Following the announcement that Londonderry will be the UK city of culture in 2013, Stoke on Trent’s council revealed its Plans to attempt to secure the accolade in 2017.

Speaking about the bid, Hazel Lyth, the portfolio holder for the council's enterprise and culture departments, said:

"We have a huge repertoire of culture and heritage in the city and really must go for this. People are always talking about what this city hasn't got, but one of the things it has got is the creative gene, and we should make the most of that."

Being awarded the city of culture title is a sure-fire way to showcase the creative talents of a region, but is also a way to attract tourists, boost the local economy and even create more jobs. Liverpool, a former city of culture, saw an injection of around £800 million for its economy and more than 3.5 million extra visitors when it held the title.

As part of the bid, the council may choose to work with a printing company in Stoke on Trent to produce promotional Posters or leaflets. These materials can be used to encourage residents to get behind the bid and support the efforts to win over the panel.
