Celebrations are getting underway in Stoke-on-Trent with the news that the city has officially been awarded the title of ‘Britain’s European City of Sport 2016’.
The city was granted the title by ACES Europe, a Brussels-based organisation operating on a not-for-profit basis. The continent-wide scheme has the backing of the European Commission.
Stoke-on-Trent will not receive any direct funding as a result of this award, but the local council does have the option of seeking financing from the EU. In announcing it, the council stated that the award was about getting people interested in sports and reducing problems with obesity.
It added that the two football teams based within the city – Port Vale and Stoke City – had played a major role in supporting its bid for the title, alongside the university and other local sports organisations.
With the award of the title now having been confirmed, the council will have the option of calling on places providing poster printing in the area if it wants to promote it with Posters throughout the city.
Already a number of activities are being scheduled for 2016, as the council seeks to maximise the potential benefits of the award. As well as helping promote healthy living, it is hoped that the title can increase visitor numbers.
Several cities throughout Europe are given this title each year, although only one in each country.
