Stoke-on-Trent canal network gets makeover

The Trent and Mersey Canal is set to be upgraded, in an effort to attract extra tourists to Stoke-on-Trent.

The canal network is due to receive £1 million of new investment. The hope is that this injection of resources will have a significant impact on tourism in the area. If the money is spent wisely, sales of Postcards in Stoke-on-Trent could get a substantial boost.

Jack Brereton, a councillor who is involved in the supervision of the initiative, told the BBC that the scheme should:

“Encourage more people to cycle, walk, use the canal corridor, make it more attractive to visitors to the city but also those people who use it on a daily basis.”

The local authority will play a leading role in the canal makeover. However, the council will have the Canal River Trust (CRT) as a partner going forward. The idea is that a lot of progress can be made during the course of 2017. Signs and other features will receive a facelift, while visitor access will be facilitated. Several buildings may be renovated too.

Canals were instrumental in the economic development of the Potteries. The region around Stoke-on-Trent evolved into an international hub for the manufacturing of ceramics. The canal network which enabled this growth was the result of a construction push that was launched 250 years ago.
