The city council has agreed to boost the quality of the indoor market at Longton, and up to £75,000 will be spent on the initiative going forward. Improvements to the heaters and the toilets should improve conditions for the market traders.
Jack Brereton, a councillor with responsibilities with regard to regeneration, told the Stoke Sentinel:
“It will see a range of improvements to enhance the shopper experience and upgrade facilities like toilets and door heaters. It is important that we continue to work with partners across all our town centres to make them more vibrant.”
In keeping with the changes, traders may wish to promote their wares by using Flyers and leaflets.
The policy of the council has won praise from shoppers and traders alike. The idea is that the work on the project will commence in July. This should mean that it is all complete prior to Christmas.
One of the local retailers, Cheryl Aydon, who sells scented gifts, has pointed out that pressure was put on the council to act. Aydon said that the toilet upgrade was absolutely necessary. In her view, the unfortunate condition of the facilities had detracted from the overall market experience. Market trader Alan Alcock agreed that the inadequate amenities had been problematic, but described it as a “beautiful building”.
