Portmeirion Group set to expand

Stoke-based Portmeirion Group is poised for new growth as the ceramics industry looks ready for a revival.

The statistics have shown that pre-tax profits for the organisation jumped by nearly nine per cent between 2013 and 2014. Printing services in Stoke-on-Trent could be used for promotional purposes going forward.

Phil Atherton, the sales director at Portmeirion Group, has told the Stoke Sentinel:

"I'm not even halfway to where I want us to be but I'm excited by the headroom when I look at sales and where we could be. An objective of mine is to have a Portmeirion Group brand, whether it be Portmeirion, Spode, Royal Worcester or Pimpernel, in every major department store in every country in the world.”

Atherton has admitted that he has no background in the sector. He used to work in textiles and within an organisation involved with drinks. However, he claimed his experience has helped him a lot, from the perspective of focusing on how to engage with consumers.

Atherton stressed that the products of the business have obtained positive feedback. They have reportedly been appreciated by a diversity of people around the globe. The goods have been sold in Australia, Europe and Canada.

By the autumn, a new kiln will be in place. This should allow production to be upgraded by approximately 50 per cent.
