An exhibition of works by Christopher Dresser titled ‘Pioneer of Modern Design’ is being shown at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield.
British design theorist and designer Christopher Dresser is widely thought of as one of the first independent designers. In 1855, he was appointed professor of Artistic Botany at South Kensington’s Department of Science and Art, and in 1857, wrote a number of articles on manufacturing design for the Art Journal. The following year, he began to sell his radical designs which earned him the reputation of being a product design pioneer.
Despite their age, Dresser’s creations maintain a contemporary quality. The Millennium Gallery is displaying several examples of Dresser’s designs including product photographs and innovative homeware items. Galleries can make use of Print shops to create reading material for those attending their exhibitions. Pamphlets and Brochures can provide useful background information for visitors and give them a greater appreciation of the works on show.
The Dresser exhibition was devised to support the Victoria and Albert Museum’s National Schools Programme, DesignLab Nation. The programme’s goal is to offer inspiration for an up-and-coming generation of young designers and also to extend the reach of the museum’s collections by uniting with regional museums, local designers and schools for secondary education.
