The Graves Gallery in Sheffield is exhibiting the works of one of Britain’s foremost abstract artists, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
The exhibition, which is titled ‘Sea, Rock, Earth and Ice’, will be presented at the gallery throughout February until March 16th. The Graves, along with Weston Park and The Millennium Gallery, make up the ‘Museums Sheffield.’ Museums across the country can use brochure printing to offer visitors information to enhance the enjoyment and understanding of exhibitions.
In a collection that spans four decades of paintings and studies on paper, this exhibition showcases Barns-Graham’s ability to capture the essence of our most untamed landscapes.
Her striking studies and paintings of the Grindewald Glacier, inspired by her walks in Switzerland, are on show, displaying her intuitive understanding of our ever changing world. Barns-Graham’s work was shaped by artists both local and international and these influences are also explored in the exhibition.
Born in Fife, Scotland, Barns-Graham studied at Edinburgh University. She settled in St. Ives, Cornwall but travelled widely through Europe in that time.
The artist left her estate to the Barns-Graham Charity Trust when she passed away in 2004. The trust was set up to give further understanding of her works and support students of art with bursaries and grants.
The exhibition will show at the Graves Gallery, Surrey Street until Saturday 16 March.
